Every major AI UGC video generator now ships an API, and at every one of them the API is a separate product with separate economics. MakeUGC sells API credits 34 percent cheaper than the same credits in its app. HeyGen runs the API on a wallet that is completely independent of your subscription balance. Higgsfield offers MCP and CLI but excludes the unlimited models its plans are sold on. Creatify puts volume discounts behind its $999 tier, and Arcads documents an API while publishing no price at all. All five pricing surfaces were read live on August 29, 2026.

If you are building automated creative into a product, an internal tool, or an agency pipeline, the number on the pricing page is almost never the number you will pay. The app price and the API price are set separately, they move in different directions, and in one case they do not even draw from the same balance.

Here is what each vendor actually publishes, with the arithmetic done.

How much does an AI video generation API cost?

Between $5 to open an account and roughly $300 a month for production volume, depending on how the vendor meters the work. The only two vendors in this group that publish a straight API price are MakeUGC, at $99 a month for 2,000 credits and $299 for 6,000, and HeyGen, which sells no plan at all and lets you top up a wallet from $5. Everyone else prices the API off the same subscription ladder the app uses, so the real question becomes what a credit buys.

That is the number to chase, because the headline prices in this category are not comparable to each other. A credit means a fifth of a finished ad at Creatify's published rate and about 0.7 seconds of Kling 3.0 at Higgsfield's. Convert everything into cost per finished 30 second ad before you compare, and the ranking changes.

The MakeUGC API is 34 percent cheaper than the MakeUGC app

This is the most useful finding in the group, and it is sitting on the same page as the app prices, one tab across.

MakeUGC's Platform tab prices Pro at $149 a month for 2,000 credits. Its API tab prices API Starter at $99 a month, discounted from a $149 list, for the same 2,000 credits. Identical allowance, 500-plus AI creators, batch mode, product in hand. That is 7.45 cents a credit on the app against 4.95 cents through the API, a 33.6 percent reduction for buying the same thing through a different door.

Two details make that worth acting on. First, the API tab's second rung, API Pro at $299 for 6,000 credits, works out at 4.98 cents, which is fractionally more than the entry rung. There is no volume break between the two API plans, so the discount is for using the API at all, not for using it heavily. Real volume pricing starts at Enterprise, which the page describes as volume-based with a white-label license and developer support over Slack.

Second, the Platform ladder lists API access as an Enterprise perk. So if you only read the app tab, you would conclude that programmatic access requires a sales call, when in fact it is $99 self-serve on the tab beside it. The full MakeUGC plan breakdown has the rest of the ladder, including the credit expiry rules.

Are MCP credits and API balance the same?

No, and HeyGen answers this in its own API FAQ in those exact words. Its wording is worth quoting because nobody else in the category is this explicit: "MCP usage is deducted from your web plan's premium credit balance, while Skills and Direct API usage is deducted from your API dashboard balance. The two billing pools are independent."

Read as a buyer, that means a HeyGen subscription buys you zero direct API capacity. The two are separate purchases. HeyGen sells three integration paths and they do not bill alike. MCP authenticates over OAuth with no keys and requires an active web plan with premium credits, drawing down the subscription you already pay for. Skills and Direct API authenticate with an API key in an X-Api-Key header and draw down a separate API wallet you top up independently.

The upside is that the wallet has no floor worth worrying about. HeyGen states you can "start with as little as $5" and pay only for what you use, with no monthly commitment. For prototyping, that is the cheapest genuine entry point in this comparison. The downside is that HeyGen publishes no per-video rate on the API pricing page at all, so you cannot model a monthly bill before you start spending. Its web plan credit rates are published and give you a rough anchor, but they are not the API's rates.

Can you use an unlimited plan through an API?

No, at every vendor that sells one. This is the trap that catches teams who buy a plan for its unlimited generation and then try to automate against it.

Higgsfield states the exclusion on its pricing page, verbatim: "Unlimited models and Free Generations on plans are accessible only via higgsfield.ai and are not accessible on MCP/CLI, Canvas or Supercomputer." So the single feature its plan cards are marketed on is precisely the feature the programmatic surface loses. Through MCP or the CLI you are back on metered credits at the published rate, which on the $47 Plus plan is 3.92 cents each, or about $1.65 for a 30 second Kling 3.0 ad at 720p.

That is still competitive, and Higgsfield is the only vendor here whose API cost you can calculate exactly before you write a line of code, because it publishes a per-model, per-resolution rate card. The pattern holds across the category, though: unlimited is a web-app feature everywhere we have checked, and it comes with several other limits that are not in the headline, including the render queue it puts you in.

Creatify and Arcads: an API you cannot price

Creatify runs an API tab on its pricing page and a full API product page advertising programmatic access to its Aurora avatar model and 1,500-plus UGC avatars. What it does not do is publish an API rate. The only API-specific line in its plan comparison table is "API Volume Based Discount", and that row is ticked for Enterprise only. Creatify's published ladder is Free at $0, Starter at $39, Pro at $99 and Enterprise at $999, so programmatic volume pricing begins at the top tier. At the app rate, Starter's 100 credits at five credits a video ad works out to $1.95 per finished ad, and that is the best public anchor you have for what API output will cost.

Arcads is the harder case. It has a real API, documented in its own help center, and a marketing page for an AI video API. It also has no pricing page: arcads.ai/pricing returns a Not Found error, there is no pricing link anywhere in the site navigation, and there is no machine-readable Product or Offer block in the page source either. The only ladder Arcads publishes is in a help center article about credit limits, which names a Starter plan at 8,000 monthly credits, a Creator plan at 16,000, and a PRO plan available only by emailing sales. Credits reset each cycle and do not roll over, and the article states plainly that your account is temporarily blocked when you hit the ceiling. We cover what that means for buyers in the Arcads pricing breakdown.

Do API credits roll over?

Not at any vendor in this group. MakeUGC's FAQ is explicit that credits refresh each billing cycle and do not roll over, with unused credits expiring at the end of the month. Higgsfield prints "Fixed amount of 1,200 credits/mo" on the plan card itself. Arcads tells support-article readers that credits reset each cycle. HeyGen's API wallet is the one exception in spirit, since it is a prepaid balance rather than a monthly allowance, though it is also the one with no published rate.

For a production pipeline that matters more than it does for a person clicking buttons. Automated creative generation is bursty by nature, because it spikes around launches and campaign refreshes and goes quiet in between. A monthly allowance that resets means you are sizing your plan for your worst week and paying for it fifty two times a year. Prepaid balances and true volume pricing suit that shape better, which is one reason the Enterprise tiers exist at all.

What to check before you commit to an API

Four things, in this order.

Work out the cost of one finished 30 second ad, not the cost of a credit. That is the only unit that compares across vendors, and it is the only one your finance team will recognize. Then check whether the plan feature you are buying survives the jump to the API, because unlimited generation does not. Then check the seat and concurrency limits, since MakeUGC's API Pro sells 5x concurrency as its main upgrade over API Starter and concurrency, not credits, is usually what caps a batch job.

Finally, put your own monitoring on the render endpoint. These are long-running asynchronous jobs behind a queue that every vendor reserves the right to slow down at peak, and a generation endpoint that starts timing out mid-campaign is not something a status page will tell you about in time. A simple uptime check on the API endpoint itself, running every minute from more than one region, will surface it before your creative calendar does. Vendors publish status pages for outages, not for degradation, and degradation is what actually breaks a nightly batch.

The short version

Use HeyGen's $5 wallet to prototype, because nothing else in the category lets you start that small. Use the MakeUGC API tab if you want a self-serve monthly plan, because at 4.95 cents a credit it is the cheapest published API rate here and it undercuts the same company's own app by a third. Use Higgsfield if you need to model your costs precisely before you build, because its per-model rate card is the only one in the group you can multiply out, and read the Creatify and Higgsfield comparison if you are also weighing the app side. Treat Creatify and Arcads as sales conversations rather than self-serve options, because that is how both have structured their programmatic pricing.

And if what you actually need is finished ads rather than an integration project, the shortest path is still to skip the pipeline.
