Hedra Review: Hedra AI Review, Pricing and Ad Use Terms

Hedra's Character-3 makes a convincing talking presenter from one photo for about $1 per 30 seconds on Creator. But its full terms forbid content showing anyone other than yourself and advertising without written consent, it licenses your uploads for training and marketing, and 79 percent of its Trustpilot reviews are one-star.

Hedra is a very good talking-avatar model and a risky ad vendor. Character-3 turns one photo and an audio track into a lip-synced presenter, and on the Creator plan a 30-second clip costs about $1.00 at Hedra's last published rate. But the full terms of use forbid content showing anyone other than yourself and advertising use without Hedra's prior written consent, Hedra keeps a sublicensable licence to train on and promote your uploads, and Trustpilot sits at 1.7 from 63 reviews, 79 percent of them one-star.

We read Hedra's pricing page and the plan data behind it, its help centre, the full terms of use PDF, its acceptable use and biometric policies, the Character-3 API listing and its Trustpilot profile on 22 September 2026, and compared the pricing page with archived copies from December 2025 to August 2026. Below is what a buyer making ads needs before entering a card: what each plan buys in seconds of video, what disappeared from the pricing page this year, the two clauses that matter for ads, and where Hedra is simply the better purchase than what we sell.

Is Hedra worth it?

For animating your own face or a character you own, yes. Character-3 takes a single start image plus audio and returns a presenter with convincing lip sync, in any ratio from 9:16 to 21:9 and up to 10 minutes per generation. At roughly a dollar per 30 seconds on Creator it is one of the cheapest ways to get a talking head we have priced, next to HeyGen's avatar plans.

For paid ads with a presenter who is not you, not until you have read section 3.6 of the terms and have Hedra's consent in writing. We explain that below, because it outranks every price on this page.

How much does Hedra cost?

Hedra sells four self-serve plans plus Enterprise. Prices and credits are unchanged since we last checked on 21 September; what changed is how much of the pricing Hedra still shows in public.

PlanMonthlyAnnual, per monthCreditsCredits per dollar
Basic$15$121,500100
Creator$30$245,400180
Professional$75$6014,400192
Teams$75$6014,400192
EnterpriseCustomCustomCustomQuoted

Unlike Captions, where every tier costs exactly 5 cents a credit, Hedra does reward buying more: Creator gives 80 percent more credits per dollar than Basic, and Professional a little more again. Annual billing is exactly 20 percent off every tier, and the credits for the whole year arrive upfront. The annual prices above come from Hedra's own plan data in archived copies of the page from May and June 2026. The live pricing page now shows only "Billed monthly", while the app still offers "Bill yearly and save 20%". Our Hedra pricing breakdown covers the API wallet and top-ups in more detail.

One more thing sits in Hedra's pricing code: a second, complete plan lineup (Basic $20, Pro $50, Ultra $100) behind a switch that is currently off. It is not for sale today. It is a fair signal that the prices above will change, so do not prepay a year on the assumption that they will not.

How many credits does Hedra use per second?

Not on the pricing page any more. That page carried a flat rate, "Hedra Character-3: 6 credits per second", from at least December 2025 to June 2026, and the whole credit table was gone by late August. The only rate Hedra still shows is inside the app, on the model picker, which gives a range of about 3 to 6 credits a second. The tidy "3 at 540p, 6 at 720p" split in other reviews comes from third-party testers, not from Hedra.

At the last published 6 credits a second, a 30-second clip is 180 credits, which works out as follows:

Plan30s clip, monthly30s clip, annualMinutes a month
Basic$1.80$1.44About 4
Creator$1.00$0.80About 15
Professional$0.94$0.75About 40
API, 720p$1.50Prepaid walletPay as you go

Treat the plan rows as estimates and check your balance after your first two renders. The API row is published: Character-3 costs 2.5 cents a second at 540p, 5 cents at 720p and 6.25 cents at 1080p, from a prepaid dollar wallet that is separate from your plan credits. At 720p the API costs more than the Creator plan.

Then divide again for the takes you throw away. Lip sync on a new photo rarely lands first time, and one-star reviews regularly describe credits burned on generations that came out wrong. Hedra's help centre says a failed request "may be refunded automatically", in credits, but a bad result that technically succeeded is spent.

Can you use Hedra for commercial use and ads?

The pricing page says every paid plan includes commercial use, and Basic, which was non-commercial in December 2025, now does too. The full terms of use tell a narrower story. The web page at hedra.com/terms is a shortened version; the complete terms, a PDF dated 25 October 2024 and linked from Hedra, contain the clauses below.

Section 3.6(D) prohibits content that contains "any photos, videos, audio ... containing individuals other than yourself." The acceptable use policy repeats it, with an exception only for people who died at least 100 years ago. Section 3.6(F) prohibits content that "involves commercial activities and/or sales, such as ... advertising ... without Hedra's prior written consent."

Read literally, that means a UGC-style ad using a hired actor's face, or any ad at all, needs Hedra's written permission first. We doubt Hedra enforces this against paying customers who make ads with their own face, and the pricing page promise points the other way. But a contract clause you are in breach of is still a clause, and it is the one a platform reaches for when it wants to close an account. If you run ads for clients, email Hedra for written consent covering advertising use and keep the reply. If you are unsure whether your state's right-of-publicity law covers an AI likeness of a real person, search the case law in plain English before the ad runs, not after.

What does Hedra do with your uploads?

You own your inputs and outputs, per section 3.2, though Hedra does not promise the output is protectable or unique. Section 3.3 then grants Hedra a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, sublicensable licence to your content, and says uploads and outputs may be used by Hedra or its model providers to train models and "for marketing and promotional purposes." There is no opt-out in the terms beyond an unspecified reference to account settings.

That matters more for an avatar tool than for most. Hedra's biometric policy says it builds face templates and voice data, keeps them for up to three years after your last interaction, and collects written consent where Illinois, Texas and Washington law require it. Voice cloning requires you to read aloud "I authorize Hedra to clone my voice." For a founder animating their own photo that may be acceptable. For a client's product footage or a model's face, it is a licence you are granting on someone else's behalf.

Does Hedra give refunds?

No, in practice. Section 7.2 says all fees are non-refundable except as the agreement states, and section 7.3 says subscriptions renew automatically at Hedra's then-current price, with no prorated refund if you cancel. The app adds two lines of its own: no refunds for prior periods after renewal, and no refunds "based on the limitations of current video and image models." So if the output disappoints you, that is not grounds for a refund.

Cancel in settings or by email before the renewal date. Monthly plan credits do not carry over between cycles. Credit packs, which only paid plans can buy, do not expire, but you need an active subscription to use them, and the cancel screen in the app says unused credits expire, which contradicts the help centre. Payment is by card through Stripe only.

What do Hedra reviews say?

Hedra holds 1.7 on Trustpilot from 63 reviews, split 8 percent five-star, 5 percent three-star, 8 percent two-star and 79 percent one-star. That is not the barbell we found on HeyGen, Captions or MakeUGC, where a large happy half balances an angry minority. It is a wall.

The complaints fall into five groups: renewals charged after the reviewer believed they had cancelled, with no refund; lip sync, eye and audio problems, with several reviewers saying HeyGen did it better; credits used up by failed or poor generations; slow or absent support; and a small allowance on the $15 plan. Sixty-three reviews is a small sample, and review sites attract unhappy customers. But the complaints match the terms above exactly, which is why we take them seriously.

One warning about the name. Hedra Inc. has no official app on the US App Store or Google Play, and several unrelated "Hedra AI" apps do. If you are paying for Hedra through a phone app, you are probably not paying Hedra.

Where Hedra is the better buy

Buy Hedra if you want to animate your own face, a mascot or an illustrated character, especially in landscape or square. Its lip sync from a single image is among the best in the category, it runs up to 10 minutes per generation, and the API is priced per second in dollars, which developers can budget precisely. If you want a presenter who is you, reading a script you wrote, Hedra on Creator is hard to beat on price.

Buy something else if you need a hired face in paid ads without negotiating consent, a refund if the output fails, or a vendor that does not license your uploads for its own marketing. For avatar ads on friendlier terms, compare our HeyGen review and our Captions app review, and if you are also weighing a prompt-to-video platform, our InVideo AI review prices its new UGC agent.

What AdsGen does instead

Hedra starts from a photo and an audio file you supply. AdsGen starts from a product URL: we read the page, write UGC-style scripts with several different hooks and angles, and return finished 9:16 video ads with AI presenters and burned-in captions, ready for TikTok, Meta and Shorts. There is no credit meter, no audio to record and no face to upload, and plans start at $82 a month, counted in finished ads.

Our limits, plainly. Output is vertical only, so it does not suit landscape YouTube pre-roll. A thin product page gives the model less to work with. The presenters are generated, so they are not customers and must never be captioned as testimonials. And we do not animate your own face, which is the thing Hedra does best. If what you need is ad variations to test rather than one perfect talking head, see our plans or run the demo at the top of this page on your own product.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hedra AI legit?

Yes. Hedra Inc. is a San Francisco company backed by Andreessen Horowitz, which led its $32 million Series A in May 2025, and Character-3 is a real, widely used model. Its 1.7 Trustpilot score reflects billing and support complaints, not a fake product. Beware of unrelated "Hedra AI" phone apps: Hedra has no official app.

Is Hedra free?

There is a Free plan inside the app, but it is no longer on the pricing page. It allows no commercial use, watermarks every video, caps videos at 20 seconds and cannot buy credit packs. Commercial use starts on Basic at $15 a month, subject to the terms described above.

How much does Hedra cost per month?

Basic is $15 a month for 1,500 credits, Creator $30 for 5,400 and Professional or Teams $75 for 14,400, read on 22 September 2026. Annual billing is 20 percent off every tier with credits paid upfront, though the live page now shows monthly billing only. Enterprise is quoted.

Do Hedra credits roll over?

Monthly plan credits do not carry over between billing cycles. Purchased credit packs do not expire, but you need an active subscription to use them. API wallet credits expire one year after purchase. The app's cancel screen says unused credits expire, so spend what you have before cancelling.

Can I cancel Hedra anytime?

Yes, in account settings or by emailing Hedra, before the renewal date. There is no prorated refund for the rest of the period, and the app says there are no refunds for prior periods after a renewal has gone through. Your plan runs to the end of the period you paid for.
